AS I SEE IT : Adrian Wimmers

How would you describe the New Zealand identity?
We’re like frog in saucepan with the heat on. We’re waking up from our complacency and realising that our world is changing. We’re discovering the opportunities that come with being South Pacific nation with an authentic story to tell the world.

What will be our next major challenge?
We have moved from time of plenty into time of constraint. The big decisions facing New Zealand will become harder and the trade-offs more tangible. The price of oil, food, carbon, clean water and public services will all increase over the next decade requiring innovative thinking, leadership and decision-making.

What do we need to do to prepare ourselves for this?
We need to plan and act in our long-term interests. We need to be more innovative, not only by adding value to primary produce but also by doing all things better and smarter. We need to be more willing to take risk and pilot new approaches if we are to succeed. Good enough is not good enough anymore.
