The number of skilled job vacancies advertised online fell by 0.3 per cent in June, but over the last year rose by 3.8 per cent, according to the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment’s latest Jobs Online report.
The June 2015 fall is driven by decreases in five out of eight industries, MBIE says in a statement.The largest decrease was in the IT industry (down 2.4 per cent), followed by hospitality and tourism (down 0.8 per cent). The largest increase in June was in sales, retail, marketing and advertising (up 1.6 per cent).
A decrease of 0.5 per cent in the professionals’ occupation group also contributed to the overall fall in June. Manager positions grew however (up 0.5 per cent) and there were no changes for technicians and trades workers from the previous month.
Five out of 10 regions experienced an increase in vacancies in June. The largest was in the Waikato (up 1.1 per cent), followed by the Bay of Plenty (up 0.8 per cent). Nelson/Tasman/Marlborough/West Coast had the biggest decrease in June (down 0.7 per cent) and there were no changes in Otago/Southland.
Skilled vacancies in Canterbury fell by 0.5 per cent in June, but grew by 2.7 per cent over the year.
The Ministry’s Labour Market Trends Manager, David Paterson says in a statement that from June 2014, skilled vacancies increased: “Despite the recent drop, vacancies were up over the past year.”
