Bookcase : The Machine that Changed the World

• James P Womack, Daniel T Jones, Daniel Roos • Harper Collins • $39.99

Reprinted and re-bracketed with new foreword and after-word, The Machine That Changed the World is still worthy of place on centre stage as management classic. In this 2007 version the authors have added information on the origins of lean production (the premise with which Toyota revolutionised world industry), the role of teams in lean production, process technology and machinery and the role of industrial finance. While nicely updating the book and positioning it for new generation of readers, it is of great credit to the authors that only few pages of extra text are necessary to ensure The Machine That Changed the World is as relevant today as it was in 1990. It’s pity more authors don’t revisit their work in this way.
