Science is being shoved aside by “self-serving political myopia, with every country now trying to protect its own narrow short-term interests”. That’s according to Rajendra Pachauri, head of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, who says potential progress at Copenhagen is being compromised by such interests. However, he is cautiously optimistic that an agreement on action can be reached if not at the summit then in ongoing negotiations.
He warns that on current trends, the rise in global temperatures is on course to reach the high end of the IPCC forecast of 6.4 degrees Celsius by 2100 – with dire consequences for social stability, food production and health.
