More than one third of New Zealand businesses sought finance during the year to August 2004 and 90 percent got either some or all the money they requested.
The inaugural Business Finance Survey jointly published by the Department of Statistics and Ministry of Economic Development shows that the bulk of finance came in the form of debt (sought by 34 percent) rather than equity (two percent). However, fledgling businesses (under three years) were more likely to seek equity input (nine percent) than more established ones (four percent).
The proportion of businesses seeking debt finance was lower (29 percent) for small businesses than their larger counterparts (40 percent).
