Well-known business leader joins Ngāi Tahu Holdings board

Ngāi Tahu Holdings has welcomed prominent New Zealand business executive Neal Barclay to its board, as the iwi-owned company continues to grow and expand.

The organisation says Barclay is a former Meridian Energy CEO with “tremendous governance credentials”.

Ngāi Tahu Holdings chair Warwick Tauwhare-George says in a statement that his board is excited to announce Barclay’s appointment, noting his excellent governance credentials.

“He brings extensive commercial, sustainability, and leadership experience and will play a vital role in the strategic direction of Ngāi Tahu Holdings as we explore new sectors and industries.”

He adds that Barclay has “a track record of success in infrastructure and energy companies where he drove substantial renewable energy growth. He’s highly regarded, and his vast experience will further strengthen our board.”

Barclay currently serves on the boards of Air New Zealand and Chorus, New Zealand’s largest telecommunications infrastructure company. He stepped down from Meridian in June after seven years leading the electricity generator and retailer.

Barclay says he’s  proud to be given the opportunity to join the Ngāi Tahu Holdings Board “to continue their great work on behalf of current and future generations of Ngāi Tahu whānau.”

“This is a role that is important to me, given the relationships I developed with Ngāi Tahu rūnanga during my time at Meridian.”

Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu* Kaiwhakahaere Justin Tipa says Barclay is the right person for the job.

During his time at Merdian, [he] established connections with several Papatipu Rūnanga through energy schemes across the Ngāi Tahu takiwā, as well as other commercial activities.”

Tipa says Barclay was a critical leader and driver for Meridian Energy in fostering positive relationships with rūnanga.

“Through these experiences, he has developed a strong understanding and awareness of our aspirations for a sustainable economy and thriving communities.

“His appointment comes at a time when we are actively increasing our presence in the renewable energy and infrastructure space.”

Barclay begins a three-year term on the board from January 1, 2026.

*Ngāi Tahu Holdings is the investment company of the Ngāi Tahu Charitable Trust of which Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu is the sole Trustee.
