Tap Week

AUCKLAND restaurants will be the first non-New York businesses in the world to take part in Tap Week, which will see patrons at participating restaurants asked to donate $1 for the tap water they usually enjoy for free.
With more than one billion people worldwide still using unsafe drinking water sources, the money collected during the event will support UNICEF water programmes, which provide safe, clean water for children in the developing world.
During Tap Week, which runs from Saturday 5 April to Friday 11 April, patrons can pay for the tap water they usually receive without charge, making donations of dollar or more by adding it to their bill.
The concept was created and developed in New York, with 300 restaurants there participating on World Water Day last year. The idea has become nationwide funding project across the US, and has now been brought to New Zealand, with more countries expected to take on the challenge next year.
A growing list of participating restaurants can be seen at www.tapproject.org.nz. New Zealanders can also donate online at the site, or text TAP to 883 to make an automatic $3 donation.
