BOOKCASE : The 80/20 Principle

• Richard Koch
• Allen and Unwin (Nicholas Brealey)
• $35

A 10th anniversary update of business staple, The 80/20 Principle: the Secret of Achieving More with Less, includes new chapter covering selected highlights of the decade of feedback, reviews, letters and criticism, as well as the author’s discussion and response.
Originally published in 1997, the basis of Koch’s discussion of what he dubs the 80/20 principle (which states that 80 percent of results flow from 20 percent of causes) is Italian economist Vilfredo Pareto’s 1897 work on income and wealth patterns in 19th century England. The detail surrounding this is fascinating and sets the scene nicely for Koch’s modern interpretation. That said, I wonder how many would have the time and patience to read through almost 300 pages of it.
