INTOUCH: FIRST FULL-TIME NZIM AUCKLAND CEO PASSES AWAY

R Philipp Seager, the first full-time chief executive (then called secretary manager) of NZIM’s Auckland division, passed away late last year aged 94.
Seager was appointed to the NZIM role in December 1958 and served for over 20 years until his retirement in March 1979. Under his watch, membership grew from five companies and 600 individuals to 400 companies and 2500 individuals.
In his retirement speech in 1979, Seager imparted some managerial wisdom which still rings true today: “Loyalty works both ways – you cannot expect it unless you give it” and “If you think you have incompetent people working for you, remember you chose and trained them.”
