While nations acting to avert climate change are focusing on policies to limit global warming to two degrees celsius, it seems many climate change scientists believe that goal is now unrealistic and an average rise of four to five degrees celsius by the century’s end is more likely.
That’s according to Guardian poll of attendees at the recent scientific conference in Copenhagen which asked for opinions on the likely course of global warming. Of the 261 respondents, 86 percent thought the two degrees celsius target could not be achieved given the reality of rising carbon emissions and constrained political response. Although 60 percent believed it was still technically possible to achieve the target, 39 percent rated it as impossible.
