JUST GOOD BUSINESS BUZZ : Cars clean up

The move to more fuel-efficient vehicle fleets is already impacting on carbon dioxide emissions and more is yet to come.
Latest figures from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries in Australia show emissions have fallen to their lowest level on record with the average for new vehicles last year dropping from 224.5 grams per kilometre driven to 218.5. Across the Tasman vehicles contribute about 10 percent of greenhouse gas emissions. In New Zealand, that figure is massive 40 percent. However new technologies, better engines and better transmissions continue coming onto the market.
In New Zealand, Toyota has just launched its Hybrid Camry – the first time the company’s Hybrid Synergy Drive technology has been offered in mid-sized sedan. Its emissions profile is 142 grams of CO2 per kilometre. Later this year, the company is trialling its first plug-in hybrid with corporate customer.
